Academics > Fifth Grade Bible As a Christian school, not only is Bible a separate class, but our teachers integrate Biblical truths in every subject. In fifth grade, students are introduced to Bible truths that will enable them to understand God’s Word and be motivated toward obedience from the heart. Computer This course is designed to introduce students to the use of computers through hands-on experiences. Students become familiar with the basic operation of the computer and the use of skill reinforcement programs. Health Text: Enjoying Good Health This course presents the active life style with specific emphasis on maintaining sound health habits. While reviewing the muscular and respiratory systems of the human body, each student is encouraged to measure his individual level of fitness. An in-depth study of the circulatory system adds to the student’s knowledge of physical fitness. The study of nutrition focuses on the importance of a healthful diet and its effects on overall fitness and personal appearance History Text: Old World History and Geography This course is designed to present a fascinating study of the Eastern Hemisphere by geographical regions beginning in the Middle East, where history began, and continues with the history, geography, and culture of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. The curriculum gives a good introduction to worldwide missions and missionary heroes, and contrasts Communism and Americanism. Math Text: Arithmetic 5 In fifth grade, an emphasis is placed on problem-solving strategies to help students gain the skills necessary to be expert problem solvers. Emphasis is placed upon whole numbers, fractions, decimals, measurement and algebraic equations, and basic geometric problems. Language Text: God's Gift of Language B Students in this course are introduced to the four main types of complements and learn to diagram prepositional phrases and complements, as well as reviewing capitalization, punctuation, and the parts of speech. They will learn to write effective topic sentences and paragraphs and to outline, take notes, and prepare a bibliography as they hone their writing skills. Reading Reading in fifth grade includes reading from classic novels and from selections written specifically for the course by Christian writers. The course enhances silent reading comprehension; encourages Christian growth and a love for reading; builds comprehension with four levels of discussion questions; and provides remedial phonics and enrichment activities that help and challenge the student. Science Text: Investigating God's World This course leads students from the known to the unknown by teaching important science concepts with the context of things they can see and know. The aim is to help students really understand the basic principles of science rather than merely to teach them science vocabulary. The course presents the world as the creation of God and glorifies Him as its Sustainer and Upholder. The course introduces great scientists and naturalists who believed in the Biblical account of Creation, and where appropriate, the course refutes the materialist's faith in evolution. Students learn about plants, animals, matter, energy, light, and minerals. Spelling Text: Spelling & Poetry 5 This spelling class focuses on usage, pronunciation, and word-analysis skills as weekly spelling lists are introduced. Exercises that promote vocabulary skills are presented each week. Handwriting Text: Penmanship Mastery II Students in this class concentrate on practicing “trouble maker” letters. Each lesson provides work on basic formation, correct pen grip, slant, size, and neatness. They also develop skills in creative writing, word studies, and journalizing
