 Art

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic principles of art by creating a variety of art projects using scissors, crayons, glue, paint, and other art and craft supplies.

 Bible

As a Christian school, not only is Bible a separate class, but our teachers integrate Biblical truths in every subject. In first grade, students are introduced to Bible truths that will enable them to understand God’s Word and be motivated toward obedience from the heart. 

 Computer

This course is designed to introduce students to the use of computers through hands-on experiences. Students become familiar with the basic operation of the computer and the use of skill reinforcement programs. 

 Health

Text:     Health, Safety, and Manners 1                

This course is designed to teach students the importance of good health habits and gives God the glory for the way He designed us. Nutrition, exercise, proper rest, good posture, safety habits, and good manners at home, church, and school are emphasized. 

 History

Text:     My America and My World

In this course, students will learn how our country was founded and what our basic freedoms are. Students become acquainted with several famous American patriots and several famous historical sites in America.

 Math

Text:     Arithmetic 1

In Arithmetic class, students will learn math concepts in an orderly manner, building on prior learning and including consistent year-long review. The concepts include counting, writing and reading numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, money, graphs, measurement, time, temperature, and fractions. Applications to real world situations and daily Thinking Caps stretch students’ thinking ability. 

 Language

Text:     Language 1

The course is designed to teach students in traditional grammar to build confidence and capability in written and spoken language. The course provides a balanced approached in skill development. Course work is designed to increase student’s thinking skills, reading comprehension skills, and creative writing ability. By the end of the year, students are writing in complete sentences; capitalizing the first word of a sentence and of the days and months; placing a period at the end of a sentence; knowing and using suffixes and prefixes; and alphabetizing words.

 Phonics

Text: A Handbook for Reading/Letters & Sounds 1

This course is designed to teach reading using the phonics approach. Students learn vowel and consonant sounds, blends, one- and two-vowel words, unusual letter combination sounds, and sentence comprehension as well as the six easy steps to reading.  The early introduction of vowels provides for faster access to whole words.

 Reading

Text: Reading 1:1 - 1:9

Reading is practiced for application of skills taught in Phonics Class. First graders begin reading simple one-vowel word stories and progress through nine colorful readers which coordinate reading material with the phonics concepts as they are learned.  The readers include interesting character-building stories, poems, fables and plays that reinforce phonics, word-study skills, and reading comprehension.

 Science

 Text:     Discovering God’s World

In this course, students learn that God is the Master Designer of the world around us. The studies of plants, animals, insects, energy, health, the seasons, and the five senses provide an excellent introduction to the study of science.

 Spelling

Text:     Spelling 1

This course is a designed to teach students comprehensive spelling skills that makes spelling “second nature” to young writers. Students receive a list of spelling words arranged phonetically so that they are able to identify the sounds they hear with the patterns they see. The students are taught using the teach/practice/test approach to develop and maintain good spelling skills.

 Handwriting

Text:     Handwriting 1

This course teaches students the proper formation, slant, and spacing of cursive letters. The daily practice in writing also reviews what the students is learning in phonics, beginning with single letters and progressing to blends, special sounds, and words. Creative writing is introduced second semester.
