 Bible

As a Christian school, not only is Bible a separate class, but our teachers integrate Biblical truths in every subject. In sixth grade, students are introduced to Bible truths that will enable them to understand God’s Word and be motivated toward obedience from the heart.

 Computer

This course is designed to introduce students to the use of computers through hands-on experiences. Students become familiar with the basic operation of the computer and the use of skill reinforcement programs.

 Health

Text:  Choosing Good Health

This course places special emphasis on the study of the endocrine, immune, and nervous systems.  The curriculum includes a beautiful photo essay on God’s care for the child before birth. The course also provides instruction for the student on the physical, mental, social, and spiritual effects of drug abuse and AIDS on the individual and on a nation.  A proper attitude toward safety is stressed in sixth grade Health, teaching the student personal responsibility for safe behavior.

 History

Text:  New World History and Geography

This course is designed to present a Christian approach to the history and geography of North and South America.  The curriculum includes a chapter on Canada and a chapter on recent events in the United States and the world.  Important geographical facts and historical documents that should be given special interest throughout the year are highlighted and emphasized.  The curriculum includes a world atlas that includes physical, political, and pictorial maps.  Activities involving the students in “Map Mystery” and “Geography Data” are frequently practiced throughout the course.

 Math

Text:     Arithmetic 6

The teach/reteach approach and practice problems help sixth graders master skills and concepts. Almost daily, story problems and frequent problem solving strategies make arithmetic practical. The course gives students excellent review/drill activities, and helps them go from the known to the unknown as new concepts and skills are introduced and taught. Some major concepts in sixth grade include: fractions, decimals, proportions, percents, prime factoring, algebraic equations, measurement, basic geometry, and beginning banking.

 Language

Text:     God's Gift of Language C

This course gives a thorough, systematic presentation of grammar, composition, and mechanics, and constantly guides the student to see how grammar applies to his writing and speaking.

 Reading

Sixth grade reading is designed to bridge the gap between elementary reading and junior high literature. The curriculum offers a wide variety of stories, including selections from classic novels and from selections written specifically for the course by Christian writers. The course enhances silent reading comprehension; encourages Christian growth and a love for reading; builds comprehension with four levels of discussion questions; and provides remedial phonics and enrichment activities that help and challenge the student.

 Science

Text:  Observing God's World

This course presents the universe as the direct creation of God and refutes the man-made idea of evolution.  The curriculum presents this information in a illustration complete with photos and art, and features many charts and demonstrations.  The students are guided in projects and experiments for use at home and at school.  Some of the topics covered in sixth grade science include invertebrates, plants, forces of the earth, the universe, space travel, and materials.  The course has proven to be an excellent bridge between elementary science and junior high science.

 Spelling

Text:     Spelling & Poetry 6

This spelling course focuses on usage, pronunciation, and word-analysis skills as weekly spelling lists are introduced.  Exercises that promote vocabulary skills are presented each week.
