 Bible

As a Christian school, not only is Bible a separate class, but our teachers integrate Biblical truths in every subject. In third grade, students are introduced to Bible truths that will enable them to understand God’s Word and be motivated toward obedience from the heart.

 Computer

This course is designed to introduce students to the use of computers through hands-on experiences. Students become familiar with the basic operation of the computer and the use of skill reinforcement programs.

 Health

Text:     Health, Safety, and Manners 3

This course is designed to teach students the importance of good posture, personal hygiene, exercise, nutrition, courtesy, first aid, safety, and spiritual growth.

 History

Text:     Our American Heritage

In this course, third graders will study American history in a biographical format that has been arranged chronologically to help students remember important dates and events.  The students will be introduced to individuals of our American Heritage who are the right kind of heroes and valuable models of good character.

 Math

Text:     Arithmetic 3

Math concepts taught in first and second grades are thoroughly reviewed to provide a foundation for the new material learned in third grade. Students work extensively in multiplication and division; story problems up to four steps; Roman numerals; averaging numbers; standard measures; equations; and adding, subtracting, and reducing fractions.

 Language

Text:     Language 3

Students begin their formal study in English as an academic subject in this class, developing their ability to think and to express their thoughts correctly.  Capitalization, punctuation, word usage, and recognition of nouns and verbs are emphasized.

 Reading

Text:     Reading 3:1 – 3:8

Students build vocabulary and reading comprehension skills in these eight books which include short stories, poems, fantasies, and biographies.  Their first classic, Pilgrim’s Progress, helps children to think at the literal, interpretive, and evaluative levels.

 Science

Text:     Exploring God’s World

In this course, students begin with the most special part of God’s creation, man.  Third graders learn about the human body, with an emphasis on the sense organs and how they work.  Students then explore the world of plants and, later, the world of animals by becoming familiar with invertebrates and vertebrates and how to classify them.  Students also learn about the ocean, desert, pond, forest, and field by observing plants, vertebrates, and invertebrates in their environments from a Christian perspective.

 Spelling

Text:     Spelling & Poetry 3

Weekly spelling lists are arranged phonetically so students can identify the sounds they hear with the patterns they see.  They build dictionary and syllabication skills, and work with rhyming words, synonyms, and homonyms.

 Handwriting

Text:     Handwriting 3

Third graders receive continued instruction in and practice of penmanship skills in this course.  A thorough review of letter formation with emphasis on correct slant, spacing, and proportion is included.
