This course is
designed to help each student to develop a comprehensive knowledge
of our language through its vocabulary, its grammar, and its
literature. The course will also enhance the skill of each student
in his writing and speaking of that language through both oral and
written assignments. In-depth literary studies include Romeo and
Juliet and Treasure Island.
English 9 Honors
Like the regular
English 9 course, this course is designed to help each student to
develop a comprehensive knowledge of our language through its
vocabulary, its grammar, and its literature. The emphasis is on the
study of advanced grammar and developing the writing process.
In-depth literary studies include Romeo and Juliet, Treasure Island,
and The Prince and the Pauper.
English 10
This course is
designed to review the parts of speech, parts of the sentence,
usage, phrases, and clauses. Subject-verb agreement,
pronoun-antecedent agreement, punctuation, and verb tense will be
applied as part of the writing process evaluation. Composition
emphasizes well-developed paragraphs and essays as well as other
basic writing skills. Literature includes the study and
appreciation of the genres of short story, the novel, drama, poetry,
nonfiction, and masterpieces of world literature, with two classic
in-depth studies. Vocabulary and correct oral usage are also
stressed. Prerequisite: English 9 or English 9 Honors.
English 10 Honors
The major
emphasis of the class is on Elements of Fiction with in-depth
studies of Wuthering Heights and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar.
Students read one novel and two plays during the summer. In addition
to the literature textbook, students read four novels outside of
class with collateral assignments. Grammar consists of a review of
the parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses. Subject-Verb
agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, punctuation, and verb tense
will be the central grammar focus. Composition emphasizes
well-constructed paragraphs and compositions, writing a short story
and a parody. Prerequisite: English 9 or English 9 Honors.
English 11
The major
emphasis of the class is on American Literature with in-depth
studies of The Scarlet Letter and selected short stories by Poe.
Grammar study consists of a brief grammar review. Composition
emphasizes the polishing of coherence, sentence structure, and
effective diction. Essays of critical analysis of literature, an
MLA research paper and persuasive writing are also emphasized.
Vocabulary and correct oral usage are stressed. Prerequisite:
English 10 or English 10 Honors.
English 11 Honors
The major
emphasis of the class is on American Literature with in depth
studies of The Scarlet Letter and To Kill a Mockingbird. Students
read one novel and one play during the summer. In addition to the
literature textbook, students read four novels outside of class with
collateral assignments. Grammar study consists of a brief grammar
review. Composition emphasizes critical analysis, persuasion, and
an MLA research paper. Vocabulary and correct oral usage are
stressed. Prerequisite: English 10 or English 10 Honors.
English 12
The course
includes a very brief review of English grammar and concentrates on
expanding writing skills. Composition as applied to British
literature is the major thrust of the course. In-depth studies
include Pilgrim's Progress, Shakespeare's Macbeth, and A Tale of Two
Cities. A research paper and vocabulary studies are required;
correct oral usage is emphasized. Prerequisite: English 11 or
English 11 Honors.
AP English
The course is an
intensive study of rhetoric and advanced composition. Major British
authors are examined for stylistic devices and literary
philosophies. Vocabulary studies are included and one research paper
each semester is required. Students read a minimum of 900 pages
outside of class first semester, and they are required to take the
national Advanced Placement English exam near the end of the course.
A score of 3 or higher on the exam generally enables them to receive
college credit. Prerequisite: English 11 or English 11 Honors.
General English
9,10,11,12
These courses are
designed for students in the general studies track. They are not
designed for college preparatory work, but they do help students
develop skills in identifying and using the parts of speech, parts
of the sentence, usage, phrases, and clauses. Subject-verb
agreement, pronoun antecedent agreement, punctuation, and verb tense
will be will also be studied applied in exercises and as part of the
writing process evaluation. Composition emphasizes learning to use
basic writing skills to write well-developed paragraphs and
essays. Literature includes works from the classics. The eleventh
grade emphases American literature and the twelfth grade stresses
English literature. The course includes traditional teaching as
well as PACE work.
