Academics > Senior High Mathematics Algebra
1
This
course will help the student to organize his thoughts to solve
mathematical problems that he will meet in his everyday life. It
will prepare him to continue his studies in mathematics and the
sciences. The topics covered include real numbers, solving
equations, factoring, problem solving, applying fractions,
functions, systems of equations, inequalities, rational and
irrational numbers, and quadratic equations.
Geometry
This
is a college prep course. It is required for admission by most
colleges and is tested extensively on college entrance exams.
Therefore, students who plan on going to college, and only those
students, should take geometry. Students will learn basic terms and
fundamental relationships with an emphasis on problem solving.
Proofs will be studied but not emphasized. Topics covered include
properties and definitions of points, lines, planes, angles,
parallel lines and planes, congruent, similar and right triangles,
congruent and similar polygons, circles and areas of plane figures.
Students will use a compass and straightedge to do geometric
constructions and a protractor to measure angles. A scientific
calculator is required. Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Geometry Honors
This
is also a college prep course. It is required for admission by most
colleges and is tested extensively on college entrance exams.
Therefore, students who plan on going to college, and only those
students, should take honors geometry. Students will learn basic
terms and fundamental relationships with an emphasis on problem
solving and more of an emphasis on proofs. Topics covered include
properties and definitions of points, lines, planes, angles,
parallel lines and planes, congruent, similar and right triangles,
congruent and similar polygons, circles and areas of plane figures,
areas and volumes of solids, coordinate geometry. Students will use
a compass and straightedge to do geometric constructions and a
protractor to measure angles. A scientific calculator is required.
Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Algebra 2
This
college-prep course is required for admission by most colleges and
is tested extensively on college entrance exams. The course reviews
and builds on topics covered in Algebra I. Topics include solving
linear and quadratic equations and linear inequalities, graphing
techniques, polynomials, factoring, irrational and complex numbers,
systems of equations, functions, conic sections, exponential and
logarithmic functions, statistics and probability. Prerequisite:
Algebra I
Algebra 2 Honors
This
is a college prep course for the serious math student preparing for
higher-level mathematics. It is required for admission by most
colleges and is tested extensively on college entrance exams. Topics
include linear functions and relations, systems of linear equations
and inequalities, graphing, determinants, polynomial and rational
expressions, radicals and irrational numbers, sequences and series,
polynomial functions, conic sections, exponents and logarithms, and
statistics and probability. Prerequisite: Algebra I
Advanced Functions and Modeling
This
is a college prep course for the serious math student working with
higher-level mathematics. An upper level course of this nature is
required for admission by many colleges and some concepts of the
course may be tested on college entrance exams. Topics include
linear functions and relations, systems of linear equations and
inequalities, graphing, determinants, polynomial and rational
expressions, radicals and irrational numbers, sequences and series,
polynomial functions, conic sections, exponents and logarithms, and
statistics and probability. Prerequisite: Algebra 2
Precalculus Honors
This
is a college prep course for the serious math student preparing for
college mathematics. An upper level course of this nature is
required for admission by many colleges. Topics include polynomials,
functions, logarithms, trigonometry, polar coordinates and complex
numbers, conic sections, vectors and determinants and probability.
Prerequisites: Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 Honors
Calculus Honors
This
is a college prep course for the serious math student preparing for
college mathematics. It is a fifth level course and serves as an
introduction to calculus. First semester deals with concepts of
limits, functions, and differentiation. Second semester covers
integral calculus, related rates, sequence and series. Prerequisite:
Honors Pre-calculus
General Consumer Math
This
math class is for non-college-bound students in the general studies
track. It teaches skills students will need in consumer situations
now and as adults. The career lessons expose students to a variety
of jobs related to consumer topics. This course is offered every
third year.
General Business Math
This
math class is for non-college bound students in the general studies
track. The course will specialize in general math skills and
everyday math such as taxes, money, records, savings and investing.
This course is offered every third year.
General Algebra I
This
math class is for non-college bound students in the general studies
track. Students will state and apply the properties of the real
number system; add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials and
rational expressions; factors; work with positive and negative
numbers; solve equations; learn problem solving strategies; and work
with functions. The course is offered every third year.
